Canadian Bookstores

Canadian bookstores include big chains such as Chapter and Indigo Books.

Indigo Books & Music

Indigo Books has been in business since 1996, when it opened it's first store in Burlington, Ontario.

Since 2001, Indigo has owned Chapters chain of bookstores, making the combination the largest bookstore chain in the country.

However, Indigo, Chapters, and the Coles bookstore chain, which is part of the overall company, as are World's Biggest Bookstore and SmithBooks, continue to run the independent brands under their own names.

Indigo sells primarily books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, gifts, and toys in their stores, as well as through the online webstore.

Chapters

Chapters is part of the Chapters Indigo chain of stores, and operates as a big box bookstore chain.

The stores are often build into shopping malls and provide a layout not too dissimilar to big-box bookstores in the United States from Barnes and Noble, with many having Starbucks cafes in them, for example.

Amazon.ca

Amazon.ca is the Canadian subsidiary of the U.S. based company Amazon Inc, and the largest online retailer in the U.S.

In the U.S. the store started operations in 1994 as an on-line bookstore but has since diversified into product categories such as DVD, music CDs and MP3s, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, and furniture.

In Canada, the products are shipped from the fulfillment center in Mississauga, Ontario.
